WABIAN-R, Humanoid Robotics Institute of the Waseda University. Japan
WABIAN-R is a bipedal autonomous humanoid robot created by Humanoid Robotics Institute of the Waseda University in Japan. The robot was built to mimic human walking dynamics and is frequently used as a motion simulator to test physical rehabilitation equipment and exercises. The WABIAN robots are uniquely designed to stretch their knees and walk with an inverted pendulum gait—the same biomechanical method humans use to walk—allowing them to move forward, backward, and sideways. The project, notably led by Professor Atsuo Takanishi, provides vital kinematic data to engineers working on medical and rehabilitation devices.
