Vermeer and Delft are inextricably linked. It is the city where the 17th-century painter was born and raised, where he lived with his family, where his children were born, where he worked and painted and where he died and was buried. As part of the 'Discover Vermeer's Delft' campaign, Delft Marketing developed a cross-media campaign in 2023 that did not fail to include visibility in the city. Flags and banners hung in Delft, depicting three modern photographic interpretations of Vermeer's iconic paintings from photographer Caroline Sikkenk's 'Girls with Pearls' series.
After the campaign, the idea arose to recycle the flag fabric. The Stunt sewing workshop in Delft was approached, known for their skill in turning old materials into something beautiful new, such as bags. This idea then led to the new concept for this exhibition to recycle and upcycle the flags into unique fashion items.
Six contemporary fashion designers took up the challenge and show their inspiration and designs. The creations by Barbara Termorshuizen, Lii Spijkers, Lily Edney, Marco-Stefano Pintus, Marieke Rolloos and Stephanie Willems were photographed in a new contemporary Vermeer style in the historic heart of Delft by the same photographer as the images of the flags that hung in the city before. Stories captured in a magical moment of light and colour. Delft and Vermeer will always remain inextricably linked. And Vermeer continues to inspire and creativity continues to evolve. This is evidenced by these fantastic collaborations and the stunning results.
