A Blooming Weekend in Delft: History, Canals, and Charm
This past weekend, we were lucky to enjoy some beautiful spring sunshine in the picturesque Dutch city of Delft. With its cobblestone streets, charming canals, and rich history, Delft offered the perfect escape for a relaxing and culturally enriching weekend. From peaceful boat rides to historical landmarks, our time in Delft was filled with memorable experiences.
A City Steeped in History
Delft is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the renowned painter Johannes Vermeer and for its iconic blue-and-white pottery, Delftware. But the city has so much more to offer. Founded in the 13th century, Delft grew into a prosperous city during the Dutch Golden Age. Its historical significance is reflected in the beautifully preserved architecture, the impressive Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), and the Royal Delft factory.
One of the most prominent landmarks, the Nieuwe Kerk, is not only an architectural gem but also the final resting place of many members of the Dutch Royal Family. Right across the square is the Stadhuis (City Hall), a Renaissance-style building that adds to the charm of Delft’s main market square.
Exploring Delft by Water
One of the highlights of our trip was the canal tour we took by boat. Delft’s canals are narrower and more intimate than those in nearby cities like Amsterdam, making for a uniquely cozy and peaceful ride. As we drifted through the serene waterways, we passed under charming stone bridges and alongside historic buildings that seemed to lean slightly with age and character.
Our guide shared fascinating stories about the city’s past, pointing out hidden courtyards, centuries-old warehouses, and former residences of notable figures. The tour offered a fresh perspective of the city and a relaxing way to take in its beauty from the water.
Popular Spots and Hidden Gems
Beyond the canal tour, the city’s central square, which is surrounded by cafés, shops, pubs and the two iconic churches. We also visited the Oude Kerk (Old Church), with its leaning tower and beautiful stained-glass windows.
In between sightseeing, we enjoyed lunch at a sunny café, sampling Dutch snacks, bagels and watching the world go by. We also popped into several local boutiques and of course, a shop or two selling hand-painted Delft Blue ceramics—a perfect souvenir from this historic town.
Restaurants of Delft
Delft is full of fabulous restaurants, and we decided to have dinner at Gaia. The restaurant offers a wide range of wines and a fantastic menu, featuring delicious dishes like duck breast and gnocchi. Its trendy atmosphere really makes you feel you're dining in one of the world’s finest cities.
A Comfortable Stay in the Heart of Delft
Our weekend was made even better by our stay at a lovely hotel right in the heart of the city. The hotel was clean, quiet, and extremely comfortable—exactly what we needed after long days of exploring. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the location made it easy for us to walk everywhere. Waking up to the sound of church bells and enjoying a morning coffee with a view of the canals made our stay even more special.
A Weekend to Remember
Our weekend in Delft reminded us how much joy can be found in slowing down and appreciating the simple pleasures: sunshine, history, and scenic views. Whether you're interested in art, architecture, or just soaking up a charming Dutch atmosphere, Delft is a destination worth adding to your travel list.
We left with smiles on our faces, sun on our skin, and a deeper appreciation for this small but significant gem in the Netherlands.
To the city of Delft—thank you for the opportunity, your colors, and your calm energy. From the grand churches to the hidden alleys, the boat tour to the market square cafés, you gave us a weekend we won’t forget.
