Robot Gecko
Gecko-Inspired Robot. Mark R. Cutkosky Biomimetics and Dextrous Manipulation Lab. US
Geckos are known for their remarkable climbing ability, which they owe mainly to their special adhesive feet. Inspired by these characteristics, gecko-like robots have been developed for high-risk tasks, such as search and rescue operations. Whilst most research has focused on the adhesive force of the feet, this study investigates the important role of the tail in enhancing climbing performance. Using simulations and experiments, the researchers have developed a dynamic climbing model and a force measurement platform to evaluate the effects of the tail. The results show that the tail significantly improves the robot’s balance, stability and manoeuvrability, providing valuable insights for the design and optimisation of future climbing robots.
