ERICA has been developed to communicate with people in various ways, through speech, body language, facial expressions, eye contact and touch. ERICA’s appearance has been designed to mimic the features of beautiful Japanese women. Her voice is generated using high-quality text-to-speech technology. Pneumatic actuators ensure that her body moves smoothly. The aim of the research is to develop autonomous, conversation-oriented androids that can communicate naturally with people and engage socially in everyday life (Ishiguro Lab website).
