Ingrid is a Delfter at heart. The old historic city centre has been her home all her life. Every week, she scours her favourite thrift shops for surprising items or garments. She loves the uniqueness in old and has a nose for it. For instance, she recently rescued a special designer lamp from the rubbish that turned out to be worth more than 2,000 euros. These are her favourite thrift shops in Delft.
1. The charity shop
My absolute favourite is the charity shop. I just can't resist not going in here. It's quite crowded but that's exactly what I love, it does whet my greed đ . Despite being a small shop, the range is wide, and there are new offerings regularly. A few days a week there is also a garage sale with larger items such as bikes, furniture and picture frames. The proceeds go to projects that give opportunities to poor children, for example in Tanzania where street children are given shelter and schooling. Nice.
2. Foundation thrift shop
Would you like to do some shopping and then relax on the terrace on the Schie or in the Kringloopcafé? You can do that here at the Kringloopwinkel, a spaciously laid-out, neatly stocked shop with a café a ten-minute bike ride from the centre of Delft. Here I buy larger items such as furniture and chairs, but they have everything from clothes to toys, and from books to household items and knickknacks. This thrift shop also offers work opportunities to people with a relatively long distance to the labour market. The terrace is not to be missed in summer.
3. Terre des Hommes
I regularly buy shoes and sunglasses at Terre des Hommes, but you can also go here for clothes, vases, glassware and other smaller items. It is a small shop with good quality stuff, run entirely by volunteers. The nice thing is that the proceeds go to Terre des Hommes projects to combat child exploitation and give children a future again.
4. Flinstones
Want a truly authentic legendary thrift store experience? Then head to the Flinstones. Here you will be short of eyes and won't know where to look. The Flinstones are masters at stashing lots of stuff in one space. Experience it for yourself. Ask the owner what you are looking for, she knows exactly what is where. Once I was looking for a nutcracker and in no time she conjured it up. Not to be missed.
