A weekend in Delft with Margrita and Inez

Two Frisian girls on a weekend of discovery in the city of blue pottery; Delft

Sometimes you just need a weekend to yourself. No obligations, no rush, just nice conversations, a beautiful city and good food. And so we, Margrita and Inez, two girlfriends from Friesland, decided to take the car to atmospheric Delft.

Once we arrived at the beautiful Westcord hotel Delft, we parked the car and checked in. Even the lobby of this hotel breathes Delft, blue elements and pottery everywhere. The bikes were already waiting for us because, like the students, we obviously wanted to explore the city by bike and so we set off towards the centre of Delft. After just 10 minutes of cycling, we arrived at the restaurant where we wanted to have breakfast. What immediately struck us is how many beautiful buildings there are here and how knus Delft looks.

Breakfast at Anne&Max

We started the Saturday morning well with a delicious breakfast at Anne&Max, a hip and homely place with delicious breakfast boards, good coffee and orange juice. From there, we cycled towards the city centre, where we immediately came face to face with the blue heart - a modern work of art in the middle of the Markt. We parked our bikes and decided to have a look inside the Grote Kerk.

From the Oude Kerk to the ceramics market

Our exploration started at the Nieuwe Kerk, with its impressive (leaning) tower. Special to see in real life where our Orange family is buried, as we only knew it from the burials on television. The beautiful mosaic windows also made a big impression Because of the hot weather, we decided not to climb the second highest church tower in the Netherlands. We bought another souvenir for home and left this beautiful church.

The city hall and the ceramic markt

We took a few more lovely photos of the beautiful city hall, what an eye-catcher! Then we were guided through the lively ceramics market, which took us strolling towards the Oude Kerk. Here there was another beautiful exhibition to view. What a contrast: where the Oude Kerk radiates tranquillity, the Nieuwe Kerk Church towers imposingly above everything else.

Lunch at Hanno's & a little shopping anyway

Time for lunch at one of Delft's beautiful terraces. At Hanno's, we enjoyed various intercontinental dishes on a terrace with a lovely relaxed (Ibiza-like) atmosphere.

Then we dove into a few cosy boutiques, Delft is surprisingly fun to shop in! From handmade jewellery and fashion to an authentic cheese shop: it is hard to go home empty-handed (and we certainly didn't). These boutiques and authentic shops make Delft definitely worth a visit if you are looking for something unique or delicious!

Canal cruise

One of the highlights was definitely the cruise through Delft's canals. Our guide, an enthusiastic student, told us with great passion about the hidden courtyards, of course the beer history and Delft's secrets, for example, we now know why many houses in the city centre have so many windows, look them up if we have made you curious! It gave this city trip just that little bit of extra depth.

After the canal cruise, we cycled towards the Oostpoort, a fairytale piece of Delft where you briefly imagine yourself in another time.

Our stay at the WestCord Hotel Delft came highly recommended. On arrival, we could effortlessly park our car in the spacious car park, with plenty of electric charging points, very convenient for us. The hotel is located just outside the centre of Delft, right opposite the IKEA, but as soon as you step inside you imagine yourself in another world. The lobby breathes Delft blue and immediately creates a warm and unique atmosphere.

The room was light, comfortable and exactly what we needed for a good night's sleep. Also very nice: the hotel's loan bicycles. Within about 8 minutes we were in the heart of Delft, ideal for exploring the city. After a wonderful day strolling through the canals and streets, we ended with a well-prepared 3-course dinner at the hotel. The food was surprisingly delicious and the hospitality completed the picture. The next morning, we could sit down to a delicious breakfast, with a surprisingly wide choice. If you ask us, this hotel really comes highly recommended!

Back to the north (with full hearts and phones)

After two days full of fun, good conversations and endless photos, we drove back north. Tired but satisfied. Delft surprised us! We can recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all. Whether you like architecture, history or just conviviality, it is all there!
