Spooky city prison Het Steen

In 1584, William of Orange was assassinated in Delft by Balthasar Gerards. The French assassin was soon caught and imprisoned. During the school holidays, you can visit this city prison! Will you join us in the medieval prison Het Steen?

The prison

No building preserves as many stories and emotions as a prison. Who were locked in the tiny cells? If walls could talk, we would find out a lot. For example, about Balthasar Gerards, the murderer of William of Orange. He was locked up in Het Steen after the assassination, tortured and sentenced to death.

Delft's city prison, Het Steen, is housed in the 16th-century City Hall. Built in the late Middle Ages, the prison tower is in the middle of the historic centre.

During school holidays there are guided tours of Het Steen on specific days and times. Check our UITagenda or go to museumprinsenhofdelft.nl to book a tour.

Are you with a group? Then you can also visit outside school holidays. Book a guided tour with one of Delft's guide organisations or via Museum Prinsenhof Delft, in combination with a tour of the museum.

Entrance: € 2.50 p.p. for children aged 9 to 17, adults: € 4 p.p.
