Duyvelsgatbrug - Pumping Station Integrated into the bridge abutment
Water level and storage basin
The water level in Delft's canals is the same as the level of the surrounding storage basin. As a result, when the water starts to rise, the water cannot be collected. This has led to flooding in the city centre in the past. If the water level now becomes too high in the city centre, eight tipping barriers can be activated at the push of a button and the water system will cut off all of Delft from the water from outside.

Because of this closure, the water in the closed area can no longer drain independently via the Schie to the North Sea or the Nieuwe Waterweg. To make this possible, a pumping station was built at the end of the Kantoorgracht canal (near the Duyvelsgat bridge). The excess water is pumped into the Schie. With the increasingly erratic climate, this may be needed more often.
The hydraulic study showed that this is the best location to discharge the water to the Schie. The maximum capacity of this pumping station is 85 m3/minute. The pumping station consists of two pumps suspended under water.
In 2006, this bridge was replaced. This new construction made it possible to integrate the new pumping station into the abutment of the bridge (which supports the bridge). The pumping station is therefore hardly visible and does not disturb the streetscape.
