Diamanten Ring - Oranje Route
The current City Bakery De Diamanten Ring used to be inn 'De Diamant'.
DE DIAMANTEN RING
In early May 1584, Balthasar Gerards came to stay here to gain access to the Prinsenhof under the pseudonym François Guyon, a Protestant nobleman who had fled from France. However, he did not get to speak to the Prince himself at the time, but was sent to France on an assignment. When he returned two months later during which he again stayed at the inn, he did manage to shoot the Prince dead on 10 July 1584. On the side of Papenstraat, an information board recalls this event.
Over the centuries, people have always kept the name 'diamond' in the name of the premises.
