Doelenplein - Vermeer

It used to be compulsory for a 'well-to-do' person to be a member of the militia. Vermeer was also a member of this. The Doelenplein was the site of 'the Doelen'. This was the building where the Delft archers met. In the Schuttersboek from 1674, Johannes Vermeer is listed as a member of the first squadron (small tactical unit in the cavalry) of the Orange Vendille. Vermeer's membership brought him into contact with important people such as collectors and potential customers.

It is not clear when the painter joined, but where on today's Doelenplein is, Johannes Vermeer once met as a member of the Delft Archers.
