Meet Fien and Lies

We would like to introduce you to some of Delft's local entrepreneurs. Fien and Lies are the proud owners of Steen Papier Schaar and they would like to tell you more about their company and why you should buy local in Delft!

We are Fien and Lies and we are the owners of the shop Steen Papier Schaar on Verwersdijk 2 in Delft. Fien is an illustrator and Lies is a goldsmith. At the back of our shop, we have our studio. A super fun collective! Lies designs and forges her jewellery here, from silver, gold and gemstones. Besides her own designs, she also does a lot of custom orders. Customised wedding rings or upcycling the customer's own gold is what she likes to do.

In Fien's studio, all KUT illustrations come to life. This is where she draws her vulva cards and develops all other pussy products. With her colourful illustrations in combination with the dry wordplay, she hopes to make the negative connotations surrounding the word 'cunt' a bit more positive and put the female sex organ in the spotlight.

Besides our own products, we also offer the work of other, mainly Dutch, designers in our shop. These include bags by Susan Bijl & kitchen textiles by Foekje Fleur.

Why did you start your own business in Delft?
We were looking for a place where we could give free rein to our creativity and work together. Many small-scale designers are self-employed, but this way we still feel as though we have colleagues. It’s not only great fun, but also inspiring to be able to bounce ideas off one another. Although we all specialise in slightly different fields, we recognise the challenges of running a creative business, and we can really help one another. It feels like a creative community in a city that itself feels a bit like a small, close-knit community.

What do you like best about being a local business owner in Delft?
Delft feels like a small town – everyone knows everyone – but there’s always plenty going on and it feels lively and vibrant, especially at the weekend. The warmth of seeing familiar faces popping in for a quick gift or a chat is definitely something that makes us very happy.

What makes your product and/or service unique for residents and visitors to Delft, compared to what other major brands or chains offer?
Our products are designed here in the studio and most are also produced here; otherwise, they’re made locally wherever possible. We’re committed to our customers and our heart truly lies in the shop and studio.

How do you collaborate with other local businesses in Delft?
We’re keen to provide a platform for emerging artists and brands, and we also involve other local businesses in initiatives such as giveaways on special days. Furthermore, we try to source everything locally as much as possible – for example, a bouquet of flowers for the shop or other decorations for our shop window.

If you could share one message with the residents and visitors of Delft about local shopping, what would you say to them?
Go for a leisurely stroll and discover all of Delft’s lovely little shops, because it’s absolutely true that every purchase makes a local small business owner jump for joy!
