William of Orange the Musical turns Delft into a living history
![]()
Delft, 5 February 2026- On Sunday 8 February, William of Orange - The Musical will premiere in the brand new Prinsentheater in Delft. This will bring the life story of the Father of the Fatherland to life on the very spot where he himself wrote history.
Musical on historic ground
The fact that Willem van Oranje - De Musical is being staged in Delft gives the performance special significance. In this city, William of Orange settled in 1572 in the Sint-Agatha monastery, today's Museum Prinsenhof Delft, from where he led the Revolt against Spain. Twelve years later, he was assassinated here. His grave in the Nieuwe Kerk is still a national monument today.
"This performance is an enrichment for the city of Delft. With vision, lef and perseverance, the initiators have realised a wonderful performance and built an innovative theatre on historical ground. The performance raises visitors' awareness of this special chapter in the origins of the Netherlands and arouses curiosity about the city where Willem lived," said Jos de Mooij of the Platform Visitors' Economy Delft, a city-wide alliance of all parties involved in visiting Delft.
A story that touches today
William of Orange - The Musical tells the life story of William the Silent: from privileged nobleman to leader of the Revolt. It is the portrait of a thoughtful, determined and visionary man who stood for values that still shape the Netherlands today: freedom, tolerance and belief in change.
With 35 actors, 40 extras, impressive projections and spectacular sets, director Theu Boermans, known for the musical Soldier of Orange, takes the audience back to the sixteenth century - a time of resistance, betrayal and courage. The musical is compelling, musical and moving, and explicitly connects with the present.
Delft as a setting for freedom
After the performance, visitors can literally walk in the footsteps of William of Orange. From the Prinsenhof to the Nieuwe Kerk, from historic inns to places linked to the prince's assassination: Delft breathes its history. A city walk reveals how the foundations for today's Netherlands were laid here. Visitors who want to turn their visit into a complete city trip can find all the arrangements and practical tips at willem.indelft.nl.
Why this should not be missed
The story of William of Orange is not only history, but also a mirror for today. His ideals resonate in a time when freedom and tolerance are once again topics of conversation. By experiencing this musical in Delft, the story becomes tangible and topical.
William of Orange - The Musical turns an evening of theatre into a complete city experience. On the spot where the Netherlands began.
