Discover more of Vermeer: From flag to fashion
Delft and Vermeer, two iconic names inextricably linked. As the birthplace and lifelong setting of 17th-century master painter, Johannes Vermeer, Delft remains a vivid reminder of his legacy. In an extraordinary collaboration between art, fashion and sustainability, the Vermeer Centrum Delft collaboration with Photoline, Delft Marketing presents a unique project that highlights Vermeer's legacy in a contemporary way. Vermeer Recycle.
In 2023, Delft Marketing launched the "Discover the Delft of Vermeer" campaign, enriching the city with modern photographic interpretations of Vermeer's iconic paintings, such as 'Girls with Pearl', captured by photographer Caroline Sikkenk. These images adorned the streets of Delft, among others, in the form of flags and banners.
After the success of the campaign, the idea arose to give the used flag fabric a new life. In collaboration with sewing studio Stunt in Delft, known for their skill in upcycling, cool bags were made from it. In addition, six contemporary fashion designers transformed the banners into fabulous designs.
The designs by Barbara Termorshuizen, Lii Spijkers, Lily Edney, Marco-Stefano Pintus, Marieke Rolloos and Stephanie Willems were captured by Caroline Sikkenk, who was also previously responsible for the photography on the banners. This unique confluence of fashion, photography and heritage highlights the timeless inspiration Vermeer's work continues to offer, and the constant evolution of creativity.
This exhibition is not only a celebration of Vermeer's legacy and its modern interpretations, but also a statement on sustainability and creative recycling. By giving flags a new life, the project highlights the circular nature of creativity and the urgency of recycling for a more sustainable future.
"Delft and Vermeer remain inseparably linked, and this project is a tribute to that bond," says Herman Weijers, Director of Vemeer Centrum Delft. "It is a celebration of heritage, innovation and sustainability, all united in a wonderful and inspiring collaboration."
The exhibition will be open to the public from 22 March to 12 June at the Vermeer Centrum Delft.
