Delft visitor economy further restored in 2023
The Dutch economy benefited substantially last year from a growing number of visitors. Figures from statistics agency CBS and the Ministry of Economic Affairs show that holidaymakers spent a total of 105 billion euros in our country. That is some 13 billion euros more than a year earlier. Figures from Delft Marketing indicate that Delft's visitor economy also grew in 2023. The number of visitors and spending increased, while visits were more evenly spread over the year. About a third of visits to our country came from foreign tourists. Two-thirds therefore came from the Dutch themselves, who went out in their own country.
Almost back to pre-pandemic levels
In 2023, for the first time, there were no longer any COVID-19 restrictions in place in our country. Partly as a result of this, the tourism sector added over 9 per cent more value to the Dutch economy than in the previous year. This means that the level of 2019 – the last year before the COVID-19 crisis – has almost been reached. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that the figures have been adjusted for price changes.
Delft’s visitor economy is also recovering
Figures from Delft Marketing show that in 2023, Delft’s visitor economy also continued to recover following the pandemic. Partly due to the Johannes Vermeer themed season, the Delft Festival Summer and Delft Verlicht (which, for the first time, brought together the winter events), the city saw a 12 per cent increase in day visitors from within the Netherlands, whilst visitors returned to Delft more frequently on average and visits were more evenly spread throughout the year. The average spend by Dutch day visitors rose by 8% to €50.37. Employment also increased, reaching a level just below that of 2019 by the end of 2023.
