Paul Tétar van Elvens' heart was in historical painting, depicting stories from mythology, the Bible, history, and literature. Not only did he create many historical works himself, but in his will he also arranged for a competition for young historical painters. The prize was a four-year scholarship for a study abroad, similar to the famous Prix de Rome. The winning works from the competitions held between 1934 and 1982 will be on display at the exhibition "Prix de Paul," alongside works by Paul himself from the period 1846-1868, the twilight years of Romanticism.
