Two days in Delft with children

 

Sometimes one day is just not enough. And so Rick (10) and I (Laura) turned it into a two-day Delft adventure - with culture, creativity, outdoor activities, pedalos and giant pancakes. A perfect mix to discover Delft.

Day 1 Art with a brush

We started off relaxed at the Stads- koffyhuis on Oude Delft. A nice place where I started with a good coffee and a delicious sandwich, while Rick enthusiastically indulged in a huge pancake with icing sugar (and yes, treacle and whipped cream). We enjoyed sitting outside on the terrace boat because the weather was good.

Then we walked towards Royal Delft, the iconic porcelain factory just outside the city centre. There a creative challenge awaited us: painting our own Delft Blue tile. Well, blue only becomes blue later in the kiln - we painted with black. It took some switching for both of us, because you do need some patience. While other (international) participants were totally focused, we were a little less so. But it turned out to be surprisingly fun to do together. And the result? A proud mother and two self-painted tiles that now show off on the shelf at home.

Day 2 Playing outside at Delftse Hout

As we still hadn't had enough of Delft, we decided to explore its nature the following day. So off we went again. This time with one of Rick's friends. Starting point: Knus, a cosy place by the water in the middle of Delftse Hout. A large terrace and a nice play area (ideal for young children). With coffee for me and chocolate milk for the boys, we were soon in the right mood.

We walked along the lake of Delftse Hout to Buitengoed Uylenburg - du Midi. Along the way, the boys could build huts, have a nice run and even take a boat bath. Buitengoed Uylenburg feels like a little piece of France and is a nice place for lunch (tip: the sandwiches here are top notch). There is also a small petting zoo so therefore extra fun for children. Then we walked back to Knus, where the party really started: pedalos! Two screaming children, one enthusiastic mother and lots of fun on the water

Practical:
  • Royal Delft: Tile painting is by reservation, suitable from about 7 years. The museum itself is also fun and child-friendly.
  • Knus & Buitengoed Uylenburg - du Midi: Both child-friendly, with lots of outdoor space and good food.
  • Delftse Hout: Perfect for a walk, playground visit or water activity - all within walking distance.
