Delft with Griet - between time, silence and amazement
From painting to city walk. Go on a journey through time with Griet - the Girl with the Pearl Earring - and discover Delft of the past in the present.
"Griet in the Delft of Now" - A time journey in silence
She doesn't know how she got here.
Perhaps it was the silence between brushstrokes. Or the gentle ticking of time that woke her up. She opens her eyes and the sky is bluer than she has ever seen. Not the silver blue of Vermeer's window light, but sharp, clear, almost electric.
She stands on a square. The Markt. Still the familiar stones, still the silhouette of the Nieuwe Kerk rising high and narrow like a prayer in stone. But around her, people in clothes as bright as flowers move, and sounds roll like thunder from flat wagons that no longer have horses. She flinches at a bus, her heart racing.
"What kind of world is this?"
But then she sees the cheese farmer's stall. The smell is the same. Someone laughs in the dialect of old. A child runs across the cobbles. Her feet find composure.
She walks. Along the Voldersgracht – which is still there. The houses look restored, oiled, as if they’ve been rebuilt from old timber. But inside, she sees screens glowing like magic lanterns. Art hangs behind glass, and tourists wander in droves. Then she stops.
The Vermeer Centre.
She steps inside, her heart in her throat.
Everywhere she sees his work. His light. His rooms. And there... there hangs a reproduction of her own face.
She doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. People look up at her effigy like something sacred.
"Who was she?" someone whispers in English.
"Nobody knows exactly."
She turns around. She is there. But also not.
Later, she wanders to the university district. The buildings are made of glass and steel. Young people sit outside with coffee mugs, talking about things she doesn't understand - data, robotics, climate. Still, she smiles. The city is alive. The city is thinking.
Then she disappears into an alleyway. A courtyard behind the Oude Delft. Peace and quiet. A cat lies asleep on a low wall. The scent of elderflower hangs in the air. There she finds a small garden with a sign: ‘place of tranquillity’. She sits down. Closes her eyes.
Perhaps this is the heart of Delft. The invisible, which has survived the centuries.
At night, when it gets dark, she walks to the water near the Agnetapark. There the lanterns dance in the canal, and the reeds rustle like a forgotten voice.
She feels the pearl against her ear. Still there.
Still sparkling.
And she knows:
The city has changed.
But she – the girl with the pearl – has not been forgotten.
And perhaps, in all her silent splendour, she still belongs to Delft.
Not as a model.
But as its soul.
Join us for a walk?
My name is Griet. Once I was a girl in a painting. Now I live in today's Delft. I see the light, hear the echoes of the past and feel how this city makes you silent. Will you walk with me? Past courtyards, thoughts and places where you leave something behind. And maybe find something.
Silence at the Nieuwe Kerk in the early morning
The Markt is slowly coming to life. The cobblestones glisten with dew. Take an early stroll – between shade and sunshine, between then and now.
Visit to Vermeer Centre
There she hangs - not as a girl, but as an echo. She looks at the visitors looking at her. And smiles softly. Art connects.
Oude Kerk and hidden courtyards
Walk along the wall of the Oude Kerk. The light in the chancel is unusually still. Then head to a quiet courtyard
Botanical garden or Agnetapark
Green amidst thinking. Between plants and paths hushed. A bench. A butterfly. A thought that lingers.
