From an early age, Van Leeuwenhoek had a broad interest in astronomy, mathematics, physics and chemistry. However, he was not a full-time scientist. He wrote in letter No 18 to the Royal Society in London: "that my convenience does not and does not permit, and have only practised to that end with idle time". He does his scientific work in his spare time; the letter shows that he usually makes his observations in the morning or late at night. By profession, he was originally a cloth merchant.
